Putting Auction Theory to Work (Churchill Lectures in Economics)Putting Auction Theory to Work (Churchill Lectures in Economics)Providing a comprehensive introduction to modern auction theory and its important new applications, this book is written by a leading economic theorist whose suggestions guided the creation of the new spectrum auction designs. Aimed at graduate students and professionals in economics, the volume provides the most up-to-date analysis of traditional theories of "optimal auctions" as well as newer theories of multi-unit auctions and package auctions, and shows by example how these theories are used. It explores the limitations of prominent older designs, such as the Vickrey auction design, and evaluates the practical responses to those limitations. He is the author of more than sixty articles and co-author of the influential textbook, Economics, Organization and Management (Prentice Hall, 1992). Question by Shak: Is it a good idea to buy a used car from a REPO auction in order to save some money?
I’ve been wanting to buy either a Acura Intergra (sedan, auto)or a Honda Prelude (auto),and after considering being able to score a good deal from a REPO, added Lexus IS (auto) series to the list too..
First off , could any of you suggest, if buying from a REPO is a good idea, where and how to start with locating these auction?
I live in Sacramento
Also, How many different kinds of auctions are there anyway?

Second of all, of all the cars listed above, which one would you suggest buying. My budget is around $ 8000.

Every comment would be appreciated.
Thanks to everyone who answers here.

Answer by wayne
First off, all the cars you listed are good cars, buy the one you like.

Far as the repo auction, people who get cars repoed, know its coming. This usually means they slack off on the maintenance. Look to see if the oil has been changed recently and such like that. Someone I know had a car repoed, and did not change the oil for 10 thousand miles. That hurts bad.

What you save from an auction can bite you in the butt in the future. Look for oil change info on the windshield and in the glove box.

Auctions: Theory and Practice (The Toulouse Lectures in Economics)Auctions: Theory and Practice (The Toulouse Lectures in Economics)

Governments use them to sell everything from oilfields to pollution permits, and to privatize companies; consumers rely on them to buy baseball tickets and hotel rooms, and economic theorists employ them to explain booms and busts. Auctions make up many of the world's most important markets; and this book describes how auction theory has also become an invaluable tool for understanding economics.

Auctions: Theory and Practice provides a non-technical introduction to auction theory, and emphasises its practical application. Although there are many extremely successful auction markets, there have also been some notable fiascos, and Klemperer provides many examples. He discusses the successes and failures of the one-hundred-billion dollar "third-generation" mobile-phone license auctions; he, jointly with Ken Binmore, designed the first of these.

Klemperer also demonstrates the surprising power of auction theory to explain seemingly unconnected issues such as the intensity of different forms of industrial competition, the costs of litigation, and even stock trading 'frenzies' and financial crashes.

Engagingly written, the book makes the subject exciting not only to economics students but to anyone interested in auctions and their role in economics.

Question by Anti_Censorship: What are some products I can create on my own and then sell on the online auction sites?
I know factories make just about everything these days but are the any products an average person can work on to create and then sell through an online auction site? Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Maryn Bittner
If you can teach yourself a handicraft that’s been pretty much replaced with mass production, you will be able to create one-of-a-kind artisan products, whether it’s home-made bread or wooden-inlaid boxes. Some of these are marketable.

Ideally, you want something worth the time it takes you that people find affordable.

Without knowing your skills, interests, and what equipment you might own, I can’t guess what might work for you. I know a woman who tie-dyes lingerie for online sale, one who makes ID badge lanyards from beads she makes herself, and a musical instrument maker.

You won’t make money from building anything from a kit. Other people can buy kits. You want to create something from the ground up, so to speak.

Question by : What are some good tips on buying a car from the car auction?
I want to buy a new car this time I want to get it from the auction. I’m wondering if its a good choice? I also want to sell my current car and would like some advice on selling it?

Best answer:

Answer by Danny
At car auctions you have to be fast when checking them out.
-Many use magnets (typically covered in felt) to check for bondo…..obviously looking for accident damage.
-Look for inconsistencies in body lines….also to help determine body damage.
-Check for excessive oil in tail pipe or smoke if it’s running.
-Always ask them to turn the AC on.
-If the ‘drive’ tires are slick and the others aren’t, the car has usually run hard.
-Mirrors on canes can help give a quick look under the car….looking for damage or excessive fluid leaking.
-Always good to know the car’s history. If you can find out who owned it, it’s a plus. We’ve all heard the rental car horror stories. Look for stickers or key tabs that might say Avis or Hertz….also if it has stock floor mats but they are completely new looking, it’s likely to be a rental as most rental companies take them out of the car so they don’t get stolen and then put them back when they send it to auction.

I’ve purchased 5 cars from an auto auction. They were all under 25,000 miles and I’ve had zero issues.

Check and see if you can get “market reports”. This is history of previous cars and prices. This will give you the range the price should end at…and give you some idea of what is in your price range.

Good luck in your quest!

Question by Life ain’t always easy: What are some good ideas for a “themed” basket to be autctioned off at a silent auction?
The audience in attendance at the auction will be women. The ages of the women range from 20-80. I really need some good ideas for themed baskets that will sell. All the money made from the baskets will go to a children’t charity. We will be doing two different baskets, along with a few other things. We have done a “movie theater” basket before and that worked out well, and we might try it again, but we need some new ideas that will really get some attention. Any links to pictures or ideas would be appreciated as well.

Answer by Answering You
An animal or Zoo themed basket would be cool. As a Zoo employee myself I know that we donate a lot of tickets/memberships for silent auction charities. You can put animal type candles and gifts in the basket along with whatever a local Zoo donates. These type of baskets always seem to go over well because it appeals to families.
Hope this helps!

Who has some information about the GM auction in Arizona for oldtimers and special cars?

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Live AuctionsThe Complete Idiot's Guide to Live AuctionsDo I hear $16.95?

A $227.5 billion enterprise around the world, live auctions feature everything from cars to homes, fine art to coal. The only book of its kind, this guide will show how lucrative, fast-paced, and exciting this business is. It covers rules, lingo, setting up an auction, hiring professional auctioneers, and how the most popular auctions work.

Auction Theory, Second EditionAuction Theory, Second Edition

Vijay Krishna's 2e of Auction Theory improves upon his 2002 bestseller with a new chapter on package and position auctions as well as end-of-chapter questions and chapter notes. Complete proofs and new material about collusion complement Krishna's ability to reveal the basic facts of each theory in a style that is clear, concise, and easy to follow. With the addition of a solutions manual and other teaching aids, the 2e continues to serve as the doorway to relevant theory for most students doing empirical work on auctions.

  • Focuses on key auction types and serves as the doorway to relevant theory for those doing empirical work on auctions

  • New chapter on combinatorial auctions and new analyses of theory-informed applications

  • New LaTex Beamer slides, chapter-ending exercises, problems of varying difficulties, and a solutions manual support and reinforce key points

Question by swissnick: Who has some information about the GM auction in Arizona for oldtimers and special cars?
Have read in the motorpress that GM sells some special cars of the own collection to make some money. Has somebody got a link to an auction catalogue? Or how could I take part in the auction? When?

Answer by Romantic rocker
Do you mean the Barrett Jackson auction held in Arizona? They featured that on The Speed Channel constantly for the past few days, but I think it may be over now. Too bad that you missed it.

GM sold some one-of-a-kind concept cars in the auction, and some of them didn’t sell for as high as I thought considering how unique they were. Here’s some of them that I saw go up for auction -

1992 Chevy Impala SS 510ci (actually had a 510ci big block!)

1994 Chevy Impala SS 6-speed manual (all of the production versions had 4-speed automatics)

1987 Pontiac Trans Am Twin Turbo (I would have bought this one if I had the money LOL!)

1990′s C4 Corvette 454 (yes, they put a 454 in a C4 Corvette!)

1990′s Corvette ZR-1 with active suspension

There were a few others but I can’t remember what they were.

Question by Kitty!: What are some good things to auction off that can be sent through email?
I’m on an auction site that gives me more credits if I auction something off to a buyer, but I don’t really wanna go through all the business with mailing it, or having the buyer pick it up at my house. What are some good things to sell that can be transferred through email? Like Coke Rewards codes, because those are just numbers with no actual objects. Thanks to everyone!
